Often skills around safety are based in power and punishment, mirroring systems that are used by police and prisons. The Detroit Safety Team supports individuals, communities, and organizations in developing skills and tools that center those who are most vulnerable, relationship building, and transformation.

Creating Non-Carceral Safety Protocols Workshop 

Duration: 4 or 8 hours 

During the workshop, participants will be grounded in an abolitionist framework—using exercises to shift from theory of abolition to practice. After reviewing steps on creating protocols, the training provides a practice space using scenarios.

The goals of this workshop are to: provide tools to address safety concerns, establis steps in creating protocols, practice creating protocols based on groups experiences and concerns.


Verbal and Physical De-escalation 

Duration: 4, 8, or 16 hours 

*Only 16 hr. trainings include physical de-escalation

De-escalation training offers participants skills to identify escalating behavior without judgment. They will learn to sooth instances by leaning into curiosity, erecting boundaries, clear communication, and centering the safety of everyone.


Restorative Practice

Duration: 4 or 8 hours 

Restorative practice training focuses on equipping individuals with skills to resolve conflicts, build relationships, and promote positive behavior—emphasizing repairing harm and fostering community. 


Transformative Justice Circles

Duration: 8 or 16 hours 

Transformative Justice Circle Training equips participants with the skills and knowledge to facilitate circles that foster community, address harm, and promote healing and transformation through restorative justice principles, emphasizing empathy, accountability, and collective responsibility.

Duration: 2 or 4 hours 

Pod mapping was gifted to the world from Mia Mingus and Bay Area Transformative Justice collective.  It is a tool developed to support individuals in requested support in moments of crisis and form new connections.  DST facilitators use this tool in creating their own personal pod map.

If you're looking for safety support with an event, navigating a conflict, holding a workshop/training or consulting with us on your work, please fill out this request form to provide us with some necessary information. We will follow up within 3 business days about your request.

Please submit event support requests according to the following timeline:

  • 3 months in advance for events with attendees of 500+, large conferences and other multiple day events.

  • 6 weeks in advance if you are a new client and/or if your event is expected to have 250-500 attendees.

  • 4-6 weeks in advance if you are a previous client and if your event is expected to have fewer than 250 attendees.

  • You may submit event support requests outside of this timeline, but this is likely to limit the support Detroit Safety Team is able to offer.
